California Young Reader Medal

CYRM Sign Up

The California Young Reader Medal Program runs from October thru March each school year! This is our year-long program in the AOMS library to promote literacy. Students are required to reall all 3 nominated books and will vote on their favorite. Students, check with your English teacher to see if you will also earn extra credit. 

How to Participate: 

  • Students, you need to sign up from your CUSD email account. Afterward, a permission slip will be emailed to your parents. 
  • You will be added to the CYRM Google Classroom after parent permission is received. Once in the Google Classroom, you will be able to check out the books from the AOM Library. 
  • After you read each book, you need to take a short quiz about that book. 
  • Once you have passed all 3 quizzes, you will vote for your favorite book. 
  • Check the Google Classroom Newfeed for any other important information and timelines.

Important to know: 

  • All the books are available to check out from the library on a first-come-first-serve basis. We do not put the books on hold because of the high demand and limited copies.
  • Check out periods for CYRM books is 2 weeks, please check out books when you know you will have time to read.  
  • You may NOT use the AOMS copy of CYRM book for your English class reading log. If you own a personal copy, then you may. 
  • You can also check out the books on SORA, at the Carlsbad City Library, or purchase a copy at your favorite book seller. If your student does not have a Carlsbad City Library Card, they can see Mrs. Otten in the AOMS Library to sign up for free.  You may check out 1 CYRM book at a time.
  • The quizzes are open book; you may use post-its if you would like – don’t forget to carefully take them out.
  • If you do not pass a quiz, you will be asked to come to the library to go over your answers with Mrs. Otten. Our goal is for everyone to pass. 
  • If your teacher does extra credit, it will be given in March when the program ends.
