Professor of psychology at Arizona State University, Suniya Luthar, states in NYTimes Anxiety article “There’s always one more activity, one more A.P. class, one more thing to do in order to get into a top college.  Kids have a sense that they’re not measuring up.”  Another large contributor to anxiety where students are comparing themselves is through the overuse of social media.

Pressures from friends, family, the media, and ourselves to look a certain way can sometimes lead to the misuse and abuse of food. Eating disorders are so common in America that one or two out of every 100 students will struggle with one.


There are definitely tough times and it is okay to feel sad, depressed, or overwhelmed. Just know that it is possible to overcome any challenges that you are facing and there are people around you that are willing to help you out.  The ACT message helps us to remember to Acknowledge how someone is feeling; Care by telling them you care about them; and Tell a trusted adult.

When family dynamics change, the stability that once was is now different and can cause uncertainty for a child as they need stability.  How a child handles these situations can vary.  Here are some helpful websites if you need resources to support your child(ren).
